Observation Refinement

What structural changes occur when a system learns to make a distinction it could not make before?

The mathematical tool

A small example comes first. In the four-card model, A records colour (0 = teal, 1 = gold) and B records shape (0 = circle, 1 = square). So 01 means a teal square. Observing only A leaves two pairs that look the same. Adding B separates each pair. The cards stay fixed; the observer’s available distinctions change. Try the four-state demo, then see how ProLT builds observation spaces.

The draft distinguishes three operations. Signature refinement adds recorded answers and can separate groups on a fixed set of underlying states, as in the card example. Carrier splitting replaces an old observational state with refined states. Order thinning keeps the states intact but removes some order comparisons. These are different operations. The draft also studies associated simplicial complexes: mathematical structures built from compatible collections of states and their relationships.

A coarse observer groups states that it cannot yet distinguish. Adding a Boolean observation can split those groups. The current MIND manuscript models this as an observation-product construction and studies how the associated order and topology change.

What the draft establishes

The work separates carrier splitting from order thinning, classifies a restricted height-at-most-two case, and analyzes more complex interactions through homological methods. It includes explicit examples showing where simpler collapse or local-to-global expectations fail. The draft states its results for its particular finite model; publication priority remains under review.

Why it matters to Being and Becoming

The coarse representation is one form of Being: the states as currently observed. A new observation changes the available distinctions. This is a precise mathematical example of Becoming in the research programme, although no psychological learning process is claimed by the theorem.

Next research question

The related Acquirable Predictive Models report gives a bounded connection to prediction: with a supplied query library and known dynamics, it asks whether permitted tests can acquire the distinctions needed for all future outputs. Adding distinctions to a description and acquiring them through an admissible experiment are separate steps. Its examples show why query orientation and the timing of actions matter.

What kinds of observation updates can be selected, learned, or optimized under constraints? That remains open here: the predictive report assumes its tests and transition tables are already supplied. Evolutionary Logic would add the separate bridge from continuous change to discrete observation.
